Summary of “A Parrot’s Tale” by Rabindranath Tagore
“A Parrot’s Tale” (originally “Tota Kahini”) is a short satirical story by Rabindranath Tagore that criticizes the traditional education system.
The story is about a parrot that lives happily in nature. One day, the king hears about the bird and decides that it should be properly educated. The courtiers say that the parrot needs learning, so they put it in a golden cage and hire teachers to teach it from books.
The ministers cut its wings, lock it up, and start feeding it only pages of books. They teach it rules, grammar, and force it to memorize things, but the parrot is no longer happy. It stops singing, loses its health, and eventually dies. But the king and his ministers do not notice and continue praising the success of their education system.
Moral / Message:
Tagore shows that real education should help one grow freely and naturally, not force someone to memorize things without understanding. The story is a criticism of the rigid and mechanical education system that kills creativity, freedom, and joy.
